BULLFIGHT CANCELLED IN PAMPLONA OVER ETA KILLING, 1997-07-12 (photo)

A wine stained reveler looks down on the bullring after all the employees have left July 12 moments before the bullfight was suspended after the Basque separatist organization ETA killed a man they had kidnapped. Miguel Angel Blanco, a young town councillor from the ruling Popular Party, was shot and killed earlier today when the Spanish government refused to yield to ETA demands that some 500 Basque inmates be transferred to the Basque Country. He was killed as the afternoon deadline passed. All events in the renowned Fiesta de San Fermin in Pamplona have been suspended until tomorrow when local officials will decide whether to continue with the last two days of the festival, including the morning running-of-the-bulls, or cancel the remaining festival.
