Image description

Ernst Haeckel's work, Kunstformen der Natur (Artforms in Nature), captures many unusual life forms, including these spectacular jellyfish. Haeckel was a noted biologist and proponent of Darwin who is said to have created the term "ecology", yet his plates were equally celebrated by the worlds of art and science. In fact, Haeckel's bold illustrations of nature are said to have influenced many artists of the Art Nouveau period. The work attempted to appeal to a large audience with each of the 100 plates accompanied by a description that was intelligible to the common reader as well as the naturalist or scientist.
