Image description

Spencer Fullerton Baird, the Smithsonian’s second Secretary, is credited with building many of the natural history collections of the Institution, beginning with two rail road box cars full of specimens in 1850. This volume, written by Baird before he became Secretary, describes a portion of the Institution’s bird collections in 1860. Now held in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries in the Joseph F. Cullman 3rd Library of Natural History, the book was published with an atlas of 100 plates and, in part a reprint of “General report on North American birds presented to the Department of War”, published in October, 1858, as part of the series of 'Reports of explorations and surveys of a railroad route to the Pacific ocean.'
