Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island seen from space - Shikotan island (Shikotan) is one of the largest islands of the Kuril archipelago, located in the Pacific Ocean between the Kamchatka Peninsula and northern Japan. In this image obtained by the EO-1 satellite on 14 February 2011, this volcanic island is surrounded by ice forming spirals in the wind. Ostrov Shikotan (or Shikotan - to) is a volcanic island at the southern end of the Kuril chain. Shikotan lies along the extreme southern edge of winter sea ice in the Northern Hemisphere. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite captured this natural - color image of Shikotan on February 14, 2011. The island is surrounded by sea ice - - swirling shapes of ghostly blue - gray. The ice in this image may have formed in a matter of several days, and it is prone to moving with currents. North of the western end of Shikotan, eddies have shaped the ice into rough circles. The eddies may result from opposing winds - - winds from the north pushing the ice southward, and winds from the southwest pushing the ice towards the northeast. Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, the island is seismically active
Tikehau Atoll seen from space - Tikehau Atoll seen from space - Tikehau is an atoll located in the subgroup of the Palliser Islands in the Tuamotu archipelago of French Polynesia. The lagoon is about 27 km long and 19 km wide, with an area of 461 km. Image obtained by EO-1 satellite on 30 June 2009. This image from the Advanced Land Imager on Nasa's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite shows the southern part of Tikehau Atoll, one of the 78 coral atolls that make up the Tuamotu Archipelago. Image taken on June 30 2009

Volcano Fogo - Cape Verde - Volcano Fogo - Cape Verde islands - Fogo Island with its highest volcano 2800 meters south of the Cape Verde archipelago. Image obtained from the EO-1 satellite on 10 June 2009. Fogo is one of the Cape Verde Islands located roughly 640 kilometers off the westernmost tip of Africa, Fogo received its name from English colonists around 1500 AD. The Advanced Land Imager on Nasa's EO - 1 satellite captured this detailed image of the volcano on June 10, 2009. The volcano's most distinctive feature, its nine - kilometer wide caldera, Cha Caldera, is shown in this image. The eastern half of the crater wall is gone, erased in a massive collapse deep in its ancient history. In the center of the crater, a steep cone named Pico rises about 100 meters above the crater rim (more than a kilometer from the crater floor). The young peak reaches 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) above sea level, making it the island's highest point. The crater is inhabited. A straight road cuts between the crater wall and Pico, ending near the wind that erupted in 1995. Bright white dots on the north side of the crater are villages. Residents of the Cha Caldera evacuated during the eruption
Ol Doinyo Lengai - Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai - Ol Doinyo Lengai Volcano is an active volcano located in Tanzania in the Great Rift Valley. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only volcano in the world to emit carbonatite. Image obtained from the EO-1 satellite on 12 September 2009. Volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano located in Tanzania in the great rift valley. It is the only known volcano producing carbonatite. The lava of Ol Doinyo Lengai is extremely cool (500 - 600* C, compared to 1,160* C for typical basaltic lava) and relatively fluid. Ol Doinyo Lengai alternates between eruptions of liquid lava that form lava lakes and fountains (called effusive eruptions) and explosive eruptions that build large cinder and ash cones. The new cone and crater are clearly visible in the center of the image acquired by satellite EO-1 on September 12, 2009. The dark spot in the crater may be fresh lava erupted from a new volcanic vent. Gray ash covers the volcano and much of the surrounding landscape
Malta view by satellite - Malta seen from satellite - Malta seen by satellite EO - 1 on 12 August 2009. Malta, an independent republic, consists of a small group of islands located in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily, with a total area of 316 square kilometers. The capital and leading port of the country is Valletta, which appears as a gray patch around the two deep inlets on Malta's northern coastline. This natural - color image was acquired on August 12 2009, by the EO - 1 satellite

To the memory of a great Englishwoman'. A tribute to Edith Cavell.

Edith Louisa Cavell (/ˈkaevəl/; 4 December 1865 - 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad.

A picture of General Moritz Ferdinand Freiherr von Bissing (30 January 1844 - 18 April 1917), who signed the warrant for the execution of Edith Cavell.
Irrigation on the Orange River - Irrigation along the Orange River. Orange marks the border between South Africa and Namibia. Image obtained by satellite EO-1 on 15 February 2010. The Orange River serves as part of the border between Namibia and the Republic of South Africa. Along the banks of this river, roughly 100 kilometers (60 miles) inland from where the river empties into the Atlantic Ocean, irrigation projects take advantage of water from the river and soils from the floodplains to grow produce, turning parts of a normally earth - toned landscape emerald green. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on Nasa's Earth Observing - 1 (EO - 1) satellite captured this true - color image on February 15, 2010. A network of bright rectangles of varying shades of green contrasts with surroundings of gray, beige, tan, and rust
Grand Trou bleu, Lighthouse reef, Belize - Satellite image of Belize's Lighthouse Reef with the Great Blue Hole - Satellite photo of Lighthouse Reef obtained by EO satellite - 1 March 24, 2009. Lighthouse Reef is a small atoll located 80 km from the mainland and Belize City. It belongs to the network of reserves of the Belize Barriere Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the center of the image is the Great Blue Hole, an ancient, collapsed limestone cave, almost circular, with a diameter of more than 300 m and 120 m deep. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on Nasa's Earth Observing - 1 satellite captured this image of Lighthouse Reef in the Caribbean Sea on March 24, 2009. In the middle of the image lies a giant circle of deep blue. Roughly 300 meters (1,000 feet) across and 125 meters (400 feet) deep, the feature is known as the Great Blue Hole. The Great Blue Hole is surrounded by a ring of lighter color caused by elevated coral. In fact, parts of the ring surrounding this feature actually crest the water surface at low tide, but a layer of shallow water covers most of Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Boats leave tiny white tracks on the nearby water surface, and two boats appear to travel away from the Hole in this image. East of the boats, a broad band of aquamarine indicates an area of especially shallow water along the reef's margin. Along its easternmost edge, the reef crests the ocean surface, where breaking waves from the Caribbean Sea form a jagged line of white. The Great Blue Hole is a vertical cave containing remnants from its days above water. When much of Earth's water was sequestered in glaciers, global sea level was lower. During this time, stalactites or dripstones” formed inside this cave, and those rocks are preserved underwater today. Believed to be the world's largest feature of its kind, the Great Blue Hole is part of the larger Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a World Heritage site of the United Nations E
White Sands Desert - New Mexico - White Sands desert - New Mexico - The White Sands desert in New Mexico seen by the EO satellite - 1 on June 27, 2009. The image covers the southeastern part of White Sands National Park. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) onboard NASA's Earth Observing - 1 (EO-1) satellite captured this image of part of the White Sands National Monument on June 27, 2009. This image shows part of the southeastern portion of the park. The dunes shown in this image are advancing towards the northeast, and the brilliant white sands contrast with darker soils. The sands of White Sands National Monument are formed from gypsum, a soft mineral often left behind when water bodies evaporate

Le Piton de la Fournaise, Ile de la Reunion - Piton de la Fournaise, Reunion island - Le Piton de la Fournaise seen by satellite EO - 1 on 16 January 2009. This shield volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Considered one of the world's most active volcanoes, Piton de la Fournaise occupies the east - southeastern end of Reunion Island in the western Indian Ocean. It is a shield volcano with a low, broad shape that resemble an ancient warrior shield. The volcano sports an 8 - kilometer - (5 - mile -) wide crater that slopes eastward to the coast. Within that crater sits a lava shield, Dolomieu, and most of Piton de la Fournaise's historic eruptions have occurred from the summit or flanks of Dolomieu. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on Nasa's Earth Observing - 1 satellite captured this image of Piton de la Fournaise on January 16, 2009. Dolomieu is the circular feature at the center of the large crater. Lava flows from earlier eruptions have left their marks around Dolomieu, in the form of dark rivulets of rock that head mostly eastward towards the shore. On the west side of Dolomieu, few dark rivers of rock appear, as most lava flows have curved towards the north or south. Little vegetation thrives near Dolomieu, but farther away from the lava shield, vegetation appears bright green
