Image description

Steel scabbard of Light Cavalry sword of Major-General Sir Henry Havelock, presented to Field Marshal Sir George White, VC, 1901 circa. This unique sword is a variant of the Pattern 1822 Light Cavalry sword, probably made in India. It has a plain blade with no maker's name. Major-General Sir Henry Havelock took part in many of the colonial wars of the first half of the 19th century, culminating in his successful actions against the rebels during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859). He died at Lucknow on 24 November 1857 after contacting a severe illness. His well-used sword was presented to Sir George White in recognition of his actions during the Boer War (1899-1902).
