The Young Communist Movement of France (MJCF) (the "Jeunesse Communiste") is particularly active during 1986, holding a number of mass demonstrations protesting against apartheid and calling for the release of Nelson Mandela. On 1 June 1986 60,000 young people take part in the European demonstration of Youth against Apartheid mass march which is organised by the MJCF. The demonstration takes place in Paris, starting at the Place de la Bastille, via the Place de la République and ending at Georges Pompidou Centre in the Beaubourg area of Paris where students gather around the National Museum of Modern Art, dancing, shouting slogans against apartheid and holding banners that read "Liberez Mandela". Jacques Perreux (the secretary general of the MJCF) and Indres Naidoo (a representative of the ANC) speak to the assembled crowds in Beaubourg.
