Slocum's lone hand voyage. Although nearly sixty years of age, Captain Joshua Slocum, an American sailing ship master, determined in 1895 to sail round the world single-handed. His boat, the Spray, was only 36 feet 9 inches long and he rebuilt her himself. She seemed doomed to founder at once, yet in her he managed to attain his object, sailing from Boston via Gibraltar, South America, Magellan Straits, Australia, Cape of Good Hope, Atlantic, and so back to Boston. An achievement of which he remained really proud was that of scattering tin-tacks on the deck at night in the Straits of Magellan, for the natives to tread on when they came to steal.
