On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Frederick Smagg. He was still in this house in 1894. Brown's Directory of that date. He would be getting on in years then. Remember him in my schooldays when he was wont to court Parson Cannell's cook (Auckland Ter.) and I have often seen him go down the lane opposite our house, 1 Dalton St., throw gravel from his pocket at her window in the outlet and get in and have a cheap feed. Smagg had no spark of romance in his make up. (Stories of how & why he built the staircase)."
