Crown of Hungary, 1938 (colour litho)

Also known as the Crown of Saint Stephen and as the 'Holy Crown'; believed to be the crown of the first Hungarian king, Saint Stephen I (1000-1038) the ceremony of coronation with this crown was essential to render legitimate any Hungarian king; the lower part of the crown is thought to be of Byzantine origin; removed for safe keeping by Americans in 1945 to Fort Knox; returned to Hungarian people by President Carter in 1978; currently on display in the Hungarian Parliament Building; from a series of illustrations of famous royal crowns published by the cigarette manufacturer, Godfrey Phillips, to coincide with the public interest in royalty and regalia after the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937;
