Image description

Pieta with Saint Benedict, Saint Francis, Saint John and Saint Mary Magdalene (Main title) Del Garbo or dei Carli or dei Capponi, Raffaellino Pietà" is a theme that emerged in the late Middle Ages as a devotional medium. It developed in Italy in the late 15th century, in increasingly large-scale works. Traditionally, the "Pietà" depicts the dead Christ, lying on his mother's lap as she weeps for him. Emphasis is placed on Christ's wounds, and the Virgin Mary stands out as an example of devotion. Other saints accompany this mourning. In the foreground, St. John and Mary Magdalene, present at the Crucifixion, introduce a narrative element into the depiction. They invite the faithful to meditate on Christ's martyred body. John addresses the worshipper directly with his gaze, while Mary Magdalene points to the stigmata. Behind them, St. Benedict and St. Francis are more timeless figures, whose presence at the foot of the Cross is anachronistic. They may be related to the painting's commissioners. The symmetrical composition, set in a landscape, is typical of early 16th-century Florentine painting, particularly that of Raffaellino del Garbo, whose studio the painting was executed in. Michel Laclotte's attribution is supported by the composition of Raffaellino del Garbo's "Lamentation" (Munich, Alte Pinakothek), which served as a model for our "Pietà". Inventory number: PPP2556
