Image description

This is one of a series of painted quilts created by Faith Ringgold; each quilt tells an aspect of the story of the fictional African American artist Willia Marie Simone. As an expatriate in 1920s France, Willia encounters important modern European artists as well as powerful African American women from history. Through Willia, Ringgold reshapes the past to redress the absence of such a figure in the history of art. In the panels of text on the quilt, Willia explains that she is painting a portrait of the famous dancer Josephine Baker, who reclines at the center of the quilt. Beyond Baker is an image of Henri Matisse's Harmony in Red, a painting Willia believes Baker would love. Josephine Baker (1906-75). American-born French actress, singer and dancer.
