OLD AND NEW FORMS OF MARINE TRANSPORT AVAILABLE ON SYDNEY HARBOUR, 2000-07-23 (photo)

A Sydney River Cat passenger ferry (R) surges past a replica of the barquentine H.M. Endeavour as a pleasure yacht (C) motors past the pair near White Bay on Sydney harbour July 21. River cats, with a top speed of 22 knots, are 37 meters long and carry 230 people. Seven of the craft, built in Australia and named after famous Australian swimmers, will be chartered for athletes and delegations during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The Endeavour, a full scale replica of Captain Cook's 18th century ship, also built in Australia, offers round-the-world voyages where 56 paying crew make up the complement of sailors. She has recently completed a four-year circumnavigation of the globe and offers day sails in the harbour as well. WB/PB
