Three dismounted sowars of the 2nd Madras Light Cavalry, 1880 circa. Photograph, India, 1880 circa. Raised in 1776 from the Nawab of Arcot’s Army, the 2nd Madras Light Cavalry went through a number of name changes until 1886 when it was designated the 2nd Regiment of Madras Lancers. In this photograph, the sowar on the left carries the traditional lance while his colleague to the right carries a cavalry carbine.
