Image description

Scouts, 1907. Photograph, 1907. It was essential that a mounted patrol doing reconnaissance work, often behind enemy lines, be able to hide from the enemy. Cavalry horses were therefore trained to lay down. Once on the ground, the men would lay next to their horses with their arm around the animal to help keep them down if they got nervous. From a printed booklet containing 17 photographs, 1907.
