‘Private look-out in Town’, 1900. Photograph, Boer War (1899-1902), 1900. Although the vast majority of the British garrison besieged at the strategically vital town of Ladysmith were regular troops, there were also around 7,500 civilians present, many of whom assisted in the defence of the 22.5 km (14 miles) perimeter. From the first of five photograph albums of 48 photographs, 1900, compiled for Lord Roberts.
