Image description

This drawing shows the Ribchester Helmet, one of the finest examples of a cavalry parade helmet from Roman Britain. It was discovered by accident in 1796 by the son of a clog maker who was playing on some wasteland in Ribchester. The hoard that was discovered was purchased by Charles Townley in 1797 and was then acquired by the British Museum. THe drawing is inscribed J. Basire, but the artist is likely to have been Thomas Underwood, who was commissioned by Charles Townley in 1798 to draw the helmet.
