Image description

Julian Russell Story (Walton-on-Thames 1857 - Philadelphia 1919). Oil painting on Canvas, George William Henry Vernon, 7th Baron Vernon (1854-1898) by Julian Russell Story (Walton-on-Thames 1857 - Philadelphia 1919), signed and dated: Julain Story 1891. A full-length portrait, standing on a grey fur rug, turned slightly to the right, gazing to the right, a crop in his right hand by his side, his left hand in his pocket, he has brown hair and a moustache, and is wearing riding clothes, consisting of dark brown cut-away jacket, fawn waistcoat, breeches and gaiters. He is standing before a monumental open fireplace, at his side on the right, is a Chippendale period dining chair with arms, behind it a basket of logs. He married Frances Margaret Lawrance in 1885. The fireplace here must be that of the Great Hall shown in its original state before the alterations which lowered the mantle-shelf, etc. Thus the shelf can be seen at its original height immediately below the Laguerre mural, the lower right hand corner of the Laguerre frame being visible [details of the mouldings and the fireplace furniture are accurate. Revived in situ by Ellison 1970. Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire
