Volume I of Sneden's diary covers the period of the Civil War from the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861 to the eve of the battle of Williamsburg on 5 May 1862. The Andersonville Prison, located near Andersonville, Georgia, the former Camp Sumter, was a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the American Civil War. Most of the site lies in southwestern Macon County, adjacent to the east side of the town of Andersonville.
