Image description

Three giant monitor lizards eat in their natural habitat at Madanganj, 20 km (12 miles) from Bangladesh capital Dhaka May 21. Villagers say nearly 100 lizards, as old as 25 years and some measuring seven to eight feet long, live in their natural sanctuary at Madanganj where killing or even scaring the lizards is prohibited. Villagers say they protect the monitor lizards, an endangered species in Bangladesh, because they "save us from snakes and harmful insects" but cause no harm to the people. Villagers feed the monitor lizards with a supply of intestines from poultry birds and waste from slaughtered animals.
