Water Supply, Dams & Reservoirs Filling water wagons, c 1890 A photograph of water wagons, taken by Colonel Joseph Gale (c 1835-1906) in about 1890. Two horse-drawn water carts stand in the middle of a village pond. Two men fill large barrels with buckets of water from the pond. Without a mains water supply, many British villages continued to rely on water from local wells and ponds until well into the twentieth century. Joseph Gale specialised in naturalistic photographs of rural life and figures in landscapes. He was one of the first members of the Linked Ring Brotherhood and was also a member of the Royal Photographic Society. ©SSPL/NMeM/Kodak Collection
