Portrait of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton (1573-1624) by John de Critz the Elder, three-quarter-length, in black dress and a white collar, his left arm in a sling, a cat on a window ledge behind him. In a carved and gilded frame (type J). Painted during May and June 1603 to commemorate Southampton's imprisonment in the Tower for his part in the Essex Rebellion. The Tower is seen top right with the inscription "unconquered though in chains", and the dates of his detention 8 February 1600/1 to April 1603, when he was released by James I.
