On May 31st/June 1st 1921 mobs of whites attacked black residents and businesses over the alleged assault of white elevator operator Sarah Page by Dick Rowland, a black teenage shoeshiner. Between 30 and 300 people were killed, mostly African Americans, more than 6,000 residents arrested and the prosperous neighbourhood of Greenwood, known as the “black Wall Street” was destroyed.
