This painting was sold in 1912 as a portrait by Reynolds of Lady Waldegrave. Since that time it has been assumed that the sitter was Maria Walpole, Dowager Countess Waldegrave (1737-1807), the niece of Horace Walpole, who, after the death of her first husband James, 2nd Earl Waldegrave, married secretly in September 1766 William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and brother of George III. She first sat to Reynolds in June 1759, and thereafter he painted her seven times both as Lady Waldegrave and as the Duchess of Gloucester.
