Pieter Verelst (Dordrecht 1618 – Hulst 1671). Oil painting on canvas, Boors playing at Cards by Pieter Verelst (Dordrecht 1618 – Hulst 1671), signed top right: p verelst 1653. Three male figures sit on the floor in the centre forground playing cards, with others in the backgroumd. All in a dark interior. Pieter Verelst was probably born in Dordrecht, where he became a member of the Guild of St Luke in 1638. Between 1653 and 1668 he was at The Hague, where he was a co-founder of the artists’ guild, Pictura. His speciality was low-life scenes, sometimes including a self-portrait. Three of his sons, Herman, Simon, and Johannes, were painters, and all three settled in England. Ham House, Surrey (Accredited Museum)
