Image description

Pouring molten iron into a Bessemer, Workington, 1952. A ladle of molten iron fills a Bessemer convertor where it will be turned in to steel; when it is tipped vertically, compressed air is blown through the Bessemer and the oxidisation produces steel . The Moss Bay works of the Workington Iron and Steel Company opened in 1856 and drew on abundant local resources : Cumberland coal from the mines and water from the River Derwent. Workington specialised in steel railway lines and thousands of miles were produced for export and use by the UK rail network . Workington Iron and Steel closed in 1981. Photograph by Walter Nurnberg (1907-1991), who transformed industrial photography after WWII by using film studio lighting techniques. Photographie ©SSPL/NMeM/Walter Nurnberg
