Photograph by Horace W Nicholls, of the men of the 'Westmeath' being inspected by King George V (with beard) at Armoury House in London. The king, as Captain General, was accompanied by Lord Denbigh who was then in command of the Honourable Artillery Company, Sir Charles Cust, Major Clive Wigram and Lt General Betbune. 1,000 men volunteered for service overseas at the outbreak of the Great War. They formed the 1st Battalion HAC and after the inspection left for Belhus Park, Rainham, and from there embarked for France on the 'Westmeath' on 18 September 1914. ©SSPL/NMeM/Royal Photographic Society
