Image description

This is a composite image of the 1903 Wright Flyer, the Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird and the Apollo Lunar Module number 2 on a background of the Boeing 307 Stratoliner. On December 17, 1903, the 1903 Wright Flyer became the first successful heavier-than-air flying machine. First flown in late 1938, the Boeing 307 Stratoliner was the first airliner with a pressurized fuselage. The Apollo Lunar Module number 2 was used in drop tests to ensure proper performance of the landing gear. The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird remains the fastest jet-propelled aircraft ever built, capable of flying more than three times the speed of sound or Mach 3+.
