Image description

A Tibetan woman examines a picture of a lama painted on the world's longest Tangka during an exhibition promoting Tibetan arts in Beijing April 19. Tibetan artist Tsong-Zhe-Rhab-Gye spent 20 years to create the "Great Tangka", a large religious scroll unique to Tibet, which measures 618 metres long, 2.5 metres wide and 1,000 kgs in weight. The "Great Tangka" is painted with ink made out of Tibetan medicines, gold, silver, jade, powdered blue stone, agate, pearl, saffron and coral. It combines Tibetan and modern painting techniques to depict the world's formation, human creation, Tibetan origins, Tibetan monarchs, Sakyamuni's biography, the origin and development of Tibetan Buddist sects.
