Image description

Air disaster on the White. A helicopter, flying from the airport of Le Fayet (Chamonix), flew over the Giant Glacier, at over 3000 meters above sea level. Suddenly the pilot, Jean Washer, an expert in the high mountains, points towards the line of the Mont Blanc cable car that in that stretch, between the Gros Rognon and the Petit Flambeau, runs 200 meters above sea level ice, and lowered to get under it. Unfortunately, the propeller went to bump against the telephone cable breaking. The device was crashing. Two Courmayeur skiers rushed to the place of the accident. But the pilot and the three passengers, two young spouses from Saint-Didier (Paris) and a railway worker from Montenvers, were dead. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 14 September 1958.
