Image description

Cornelius Johnson (London 1593 - Utrecht 1661). Oil painting on canvas, William Hamilton, 2nd Duke of Hamilton (1616-1651) with John Maitland, Earl (later) Duke of Lauderdale (1616-1682) by Cornelius Johnson (London 1593 - Utrecht 1661), painted in Holland in 1649, presumably did not come to Ham until after Lauderdale married Elizabeth Dysart in 1672. Two half-length portraits, Hamilton on the left and Lauderdale on the right. Both men are standing, turned towards the centre and are looking to the left (Lauderdale) and right (Hamilton). They both wear black robes over white shirts with collar, and have natural long hair. Lauderdale is handing Hamilton a rolled scroll. They are both in front of a long green drape which is drawn back on the right to show a skyscape with a setting or rising sun. There is a replica in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
