A policeman looks towards the building from which Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic was assassinated on Wednesday, in central Belgrade March 14, 2003. Djindjic, who battled to transform his country from pariah state to a market-oriented democracy, was shot outside Belgrade's main government building, an act that sent shock waves through Serbia and alarmed Western powers. The Serbian government Friday directly accused ex-allies of former president Slobodan Milosevic of organizing and carrying out the assassination of the prime minister. In a statement, officials said a police investigation of the fatal shooting of Zoran Djindjic shows that "a criminal clan, as well as some other groups, mainly police-security structures from Milosevic's times ... were involved in organizing and carrying out" the assassination.
