Small brushstrokes follow the contours of the man's face, and some of the fine hairs of the beard are scratched through the paint. The tiny strokes of intense colour blend together visually from a short distance, achieving an effect almost like oil painting. This picture of a man in a breastplate may have been a study for an historical painting. Hubert von Herkomer was a leading London artist in the late 19th century.
