Image description

Veteran U.S. pilot Gail Halvorsen (R), who flew a C-54 Sky Master bomber during the Soviet blockade of the German capital in 1948 and 1949, is welcomed by Berlin citizen Ingrid Gliesche (R), 68, during a ceremony at a memorial commemorating the 50th anniversary of the American and British Airlift at Berlin's Tempelhof airport May 12. Hailverson was a pilot of the so-called "candy bombers" which supplied West-Berlin with vital supplies such as food, fuel and medicine. U.S. President Bill Clinton will visit Germany on May 13 and 14, to participate in the 50th anniversary festivities. FAB/EB
