Bartolomé Carducho

Italian painter, 1560-1608

Carducho was known as a very successful painter who was influential in bringing Italian ideas to Spain. Carducho studied painting, sculpture and architecture in Florence with Bartolomeo Ammanati. By the age of 18 he was working under Federico Zuccaro on the painting of the dome of the cathedral of S. Maria del Fiore in Florence. He accompanied Zuccaro to Rome, where he executed various commissions for Pope Gregory XIII, and later to Spain to paint the cloister at the Escorial with Zuccaro.
