Image description

What stood on the site of the marble arch? "Tyburn Gallows", the Middlesex gallows, which stood near the junction of the Edgware and Bayswater Roads, from the 12th century until 1783. The permanent structure was removed in 1759, and replaced by a movable gallows. The name Tyburn comes from a small stream now running underground from Hampstead. The Marble Arch was modelled by Nash, and intended to serve as an entrance to Buckingham Palace. It was originally erected in 1828, and re-erected on the present site in 1851. It is stated the cost was about £80,000, and that the central gates are some of the finest in Europe. Illustration for one of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939.
