Having left Pittsburgh by stage, Prince Maximilian and his traveling companions boarded a steamboat on the Ohio River at Wheeling, in what is now West Virginia, on October 9, 1832. Nine days later they arrived at Mount Vernon, Indiana, and sought lodgings ashore for the night. The next morning they headed north from the river some fifteen miles by wagon to the utopian community of New Harmony, where they remained over the next several months before continuing on to St. Louis.
