Housed in a restored turn-of-the century Newport Mansion, the National Museum of American Illustration is the first to bring together works by the finest American illustrators. Owners and curators, Lawrence and Judith Cutler, have amassed a magnificent collection of over 2,000 paintings, including works by Norman Rockwell, who is famous for depicting the American ‘slice of life’, Maxfield Parrish ‘the master of make believe’ and more recently Drew Streussen, who created the original artwork for the Star Wars films. The collection also boasts the largest holding of Norman Rockwell works outside the Rockwell Museum, from his famous World War II images to more familiar, idyllic small-town American scenes. These icons of American art hang alongside the works of lesser known but no less influential artists: Thomas Nast, Howard Chandler Christy, N.C. Wyeth, Charles Dana Gibson, J.C. Leyendecker, Violet Oakland and many others.
